Extension Office, Southern States Feed, Chris Overly (Farrier), Kelly Flowers (Equine Massage Therapist), Richie
Wingfield (John Lyons Certified Trainer), Darrel the Equine Dentist, Second Stride, Midway College and John
Burke (Veterinarian).

It was a very educational day for all that showed up.  We gave away a bunch of door prizes that were donated by
various exhibitors including Bella Vista Equestrian  Center, Second Stride, Southern States and KEEP.  The food
was excellent which was from Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro.

We hope everyone had a good time and that next year we have better weather to do more outside demos!

Thanks
Lori

We were very fortunate to have Amanda Sarles, a B rated Pony Clubber from Flying Changes to help us out at
Mock Rally this year.

Topic: Horse Management for Rally:
A big Thanks to Megan for setting up and taking down the Tack Room, Feed Stall and Horse Stall.

Horse Stall:
We went over what to do when you first get to Rally. Before you even unload your horse setup your horses stall.
Look for loose nails and put duck tape over them or remove them. Each member should have at least 3 bags of
shavings for your stall, put preferably more. Also your Buckets need to be labeled with your name, penny number,
horse name and if it’s a feed or water bucket. Each stall will need to have 2 water buckets and one feed bucket.
We also discussed that it’s helpful to sweep the shavings back from the stall door about 1-2ft so the horse won’t
get shavings all over the place.  Each horse needs to be fitted with a leather halter or a halter that has leather
break away option. You must have a cotton lead rope to tie your horse.  If you enter the stall you need to put the
lead on your horse and either tie them or put the rope over their back.  Take the lead off and hang it on your
door.  All buckets, stall guards and leads will be hung with twine so it can break. If you have a nylon lead you must
wear gloves when using it and never tie with it.  Fans can be hung with bungee cords, they must have outdoor
extension cords and be turned off at night.  Make sure your stall is cleaned every morning and evening, and a
couple times during the day.  Make sure your water buckets are full prior to leaving for the night.  Take your
horse out for walks every morning and during the day if time permits.  Each stall must have a Stall Card with your
horses name, its picture, owners name, vets name, contact numbers, vital signs, any medicines or supplements
the horse is getting and any important information one might need to know about the horse if you are not around.

Tack Room:
Parents can help unload trailers at the horse park prior to the start of rally. At noon all parents, DC etc must leave
the barn area. Each team will then setup their tack room as Megan had ours setup for mock rally. Work together
as a team to set this up. Make sure it is neat and everything is easily accessible. Label saddle and bridles racks
for each member.  Make sure we have extra tack that will fit each horse. The Club has 3 kits.  So the only things
that the each member needs to bring are: a wash bucket labeled wash only, 3 sponges 1 labeled dock, face and
body and a groom tote, with every thing labeled with your name, and competitor number. We also discussed what
should be in your groom tote, which you can get off the National Website. We also whet through all the kits. The
First Aid Kit, Tool Box, Equine First Aid Kit, Tack Cleaning Kit, and Grooming Kit. Once the tack stall is setup HM
will come over and inspect our kits.  Expiration dating is very important, we cannot have expired items in our kits.
We will check all kits prior to taking them to rally.  Amanda also said that the most important thing to have is a
working clock set on Lexington Time, SO YOUR NOT LATE!!!  WE also discussed that its helpful to have a
schedule written down on the white board so your not late, or wasting time. Being on time is EXTREMELY
important.  If you are a late person make sure you plan to be everywhere 15mins early. Points are give for each
minute a member is late. These are very avoidable points.

Feed Room:
Not everybody will have a feed room at Rally, but if you do, here is what we talked about. Everybody needs to put
their horses feed in Brown paper bags wrapped with duck tape, with the horses name, how much (in lbs), and
what type of feed it is, AM or PM, and any supplements. There will be a feed chart near the feed bin so that each
member knows what horse is getting what.  It also might be a good idea to coordinate with your team on who can
bring the hay, if all the horses get the same kind, that way you’re not all bringing hay. But you must have the hay
labeled with the horses name and how much they get AM and PM. The hay must also be covered.  This is also
where you store your stall cleaning equipment. And the Feed bin must be locked at all times, with a doubled
ended snap.

Tips for a Successful Jog:
Amanda gave everybody a handout on the correct way to do Jog’s.(If you did not get one please see Lori, she
has extra) Jog’s are a time to shine, it’s the first time that the judges will see you and your horse, so make you
and your horse look great.  The most important thing is to make sure your horse it trotting at a good speed.  Too
slow will probably lead the judges to have you trot again because they could not tell if the horse was sound or not.
If you know your horse does not jog well make sure your stable manager helps get your horse going.  See the
handout for more info.

Extras:
Remember to look at the handout Amanda gave out. If you have an issue with any horse management at rally
discuss it with your team captain and check the rule books. If you feel like something is wrong your whole team
can discuss it with Horse Management in a
polite manner.
NO CELLPHONES!
